SCHOOL-BASED PROGRAMS
Our classroom
programs can be tailored to meet the needs of individual schools
and are offered to students in grades pre K -12.
Project Alert:
A drug prevention program from the BEST Foundation for a Drug Free
Tomorrow targeted at middle school students. Longitudinal studies
have proven the program effective for helping young people identify
and reduce pressures that lead to experimentation with drugs, and
at preventing teenage experimenters from becoming regular drug users.
Project Alert stresses how drugs can affect students now, counters
the myth that "everyone uses," identifies internal and
external pressures to use drugs, targets substances that are used
first and most widely among young people, portrays appropriate role
models, and actively involves students in the learning process.
Project TND:
Geared for senior high students, TND is a "model" or
"exemplary" program listed by the National Institute
on Drug Abuse and other organizations. It has received the Center
for Substance Abuse Prevention Year 2000 Exemplary Substance Abuse
Prevention Programs Award. TND uses a motivation/skills/decision-making
model to help students stop or reduce the use of cigarettes, alcohol,
marijuana and other drugs; state accurate information about environmental,
social, physiological and emotional consequences of drug use and
abuse; demonstrate behavioral and cognitive skills; and make a
personal commitment about drug use.
An
Apple A Day: (Coming
in Fall, 2006!) An Apple a Day© (AAAD©) is a literacy-based
substance abuse prevention education program. It is used in school
settings, after school sites, summer programs, and/or daycare
settings. A parent-training component is also available.
The curriculum
can be incorporated into existing health curricula or can be implemented
as an independent 6-8 week program. The strategies of AAAD©
include the use of trade books, student journals, characters from
literary selections as examples of role models, and role-play
scenarios. Reading and writing exercises, picture drawing, and
brain storming activities engage students in an interactive learning
process that fosters resiliency and self-determination about substance
abuse.

BABES
(Beginning Alcohol & Addiction Basic Education Studies)
uses believable, cuddly puppets to tell six story lessons.
It is just one curriculum used to provide age-appropriate
information that will help provide children with healthy
living skills and information needed for a lifetime of
protection from substance abuse.
