3. The Youth Summit is a free countywide event held once a year in the spring. The event is meant to recognize of youth who have been involved in peer leadership, youth voice, and community service. Students will be part of a countywide showcase of their contributions to our communities. There will also be a health fair, Penguin Awards, and Prizes.

  • The Penguin Award - This Award will be given to 10 students that have consistently and voluntarily gone above and beyond to help others in peer leadership, youth voice, and community service. The name and meaning of the award are based on the story of Australia's Fairy Penguin. This bird is small and clumsy on land. Alone, the little birds would not survive long as the fox is their natural enemy. The penguins survive, however, by banding together at the water's edge, and marching, in a group, to their burrows. This way, they all survive. The lesson learned from the Penguin is simple - we are all stronger when we help each other.

4. The Youth Advisory Board is a countywide program offered by YDC. The Youth Advisory board will be based on the principle of Youth Development. Youth Development is the Idea that as young people are attempting to develop in their lives we can provide opportunities for them to develop in a positive way. We will attempt to do this by getting young people involved in the planning and facilitation of events such as the Youth Speak Out and the Youth Summit and allowing them to help one another and their communities. We believe not only that we have something to offer youth but also that young people have much to offer as well.

YAB Goals:

  • Helps young people to get involved in their community
  • Provides the opportunity for young people to take leadership roles in a formal setting
  • Encourages young people to make decisions that effect their communities and their lives
  • Demonstrates that youth are responsible and can make important decisions

5. The Youth Development Coalition also has members who are trained to facilitate Adult Workshops on Youth Development.
